Pi Day 2018

3.14 are the first three digits of π and the U.S. date format for 14th March. Not everybody knows that but St Hilda’s certainly do. The mini maths leaders organised a bake sale in aid of Alder Hey Hospital, and it was the mother of all bake sales. Students and staff were unbelievably generous and their donations far exceeded expectations, seeing sales extended to 2 days and a whopping £218.86 raised. Thank you everyone!

Confident of their prowess in the kitchen and their skills with an icing bag, Mr Walsh and Mrs Pichilingi were good sports and agreed to an English vs maths bake off. A darn good read, and a darn good eat I’m told, Mrs Pichilingi’s creation was an artful replica of the book “Life of Pi”. It was amazing. Mr Walsh’s cake, a chocolate base raspberry cheesecake, decorated with raspberries in the shape of the greek letter pi, was simple in design but a delight for the taste buds. The judging panel – head teacher Mrs Code, governor Mrs Costello, and visitors Mr Carden and Mr Liptrot from LCQM – voted in favour of Mrs Pichilingi. Well done to English!

So impressed were the mini maths leaders by the student offerings that an impromptu category ‘best student bake’ was introduced. Unable to choose between them, Cameron Scott-Allen and Harrison Hanley were announced joint winners. Well done boys!

During the day the mini maths leaders had also organised the VWLLSS competitions where entrants had to figure out the maths key words which had has their vowels removed, or rather “subtracted.” RLR would be RULER for example. This proved to be a very popular puzzle; many students entered and had a full set of correct answers. From these, the winner, chosen at random, was Sam Wainwright from 7AS. Well done Sam and all the entrants who earned house points for participating.
