Girls in Maths
On Friday 14th July, a dozen Year 10 students attended a ‘Girls in Maths’ event at Liverpool University. Led by female mathematicians, the students explored questions including:
- Can you make all the numbers from 1 to 100 using exactly four 4s?
- From a 2 minute video clip alone, is that hole in the ground a mile deep?
- How does maths make music better?
- How can you play the odds in games like ‘deal or no deal’?
- How is statistics helping medical advances?
- What maths is there in The Simpsons?
One student said “It was good. It let us see what different types of maths you might do at university.” Another said “It allowed us to explore what careers use maths like statistics, music and media.” To find out more about Maths in The Simpsons, look up Katie Steckles or Simon Singh, or borrow the book “The Simpsons and their Mathematical Secrets” from the library.
